Itinerary

DAY 1

Your Private Mt Nemrut Day Tour begins in the afternoon with pickup from your hotel in Adıyaman or Kahta. First, you’ll head toward Karakus Tumulus (Black Bird Burial Mound), the burial site of Antiochus I’s daughters, set dramatically in the Kahta region.

Next, drive to the Roman Bridge at Cendere River, a beautiful ancient bridge offering a peaceful stop and photo opportunity.

Then you proceed to Kahta, where you’ll visit both the old (Arsemia) and the new castle, learning about the history of the region and the Kingdom of Commagene.

As dusk approaches, ascend to the summit of Mount Nemrut. Explore the East & West Terraces statue heads, guardian lions and eagles, reliefs of gods and ancestors and position yourself to watch the sunset wash over this Hellenistic sanctuary.

After sunset, begin your descent and return transfer to your hotel in Kahta or Adıyaman (or airport drop-off if arranged).

Karakus Tumulus (Black Bird Burial Mound)  A funerary monument built by the Commagene Kingdom for Queen Isias, Princess Antiochis, and Princess Aka I, featuring Doric columns topped with animal statuary including an eagle.

Roman Bridge at Cendere  Ancient Roman bridge of graceful arches spanning the Cendere River, offering historic architecture and scenic photo opportunities.

Old & New Castles in Kahta (Arsemia)  Ruins of royal structures tied to the Kingdom of Commagene, overlooking the valley and helping contextualize the political and cultural backdrop of Mount Nemrut.

East Terrace & West Terrace of Mount Nemrut  The summit terraces with colossal statues, reliefs, and guardian animals (eagles & lions) framed by the burial mound of King Antiochus I.

Sunset Viewpoint at Nemrut Summit  A vantage point where the fading light casts dramatic shadows over statue heads and tumulus, offering an unforgettable and mystical sunset experience.

FAQ Private Mt Nemrut Tour

How long does the Mt Nemrut Tour last?

The tour typically takes around 6-8 hours, depending on your departure point, how long you spend at key stops like Karakus Tumulus and on the summit, and the timing of sunset.

What is the entrance fee for Mount Nemrut?

For foreigners, the entrance fee is about €10 as of 2025; note that the Museum Pass Türkiye is valid at the site.

Can I visit both East and West terraces on this tour?

Yes, you will visit both the East and West terraces, which include the large statues, reliefs, and turkey’s mix of Greco Persian heritage.

What is the Karakus Tumulus and why is it called “Black Bird”?

Karakus Tumulus is a royal burial mound for prominent female figures of Commagene, and it’s called “Black Bird” because one of its Doric columns is topped with a stone eagle.

Is the tour physically demanding?

It involves some uphill walking, stairs, and possibly rough paths especially near the summit and terraces; good walking shoes and moderate fitness will help.

What is the best time to visit for views and photos?

Sunset is frequently recommended because the light elongates shadows, highlights the reliefs, and brings out contrast on the statues, though sunrise is also beautiful. Some tours are scheduled so you can experience sunset from the summit.

What should I bring for this tour?

Warm or layered clothing (especially after sunset), water, a camera, flashlight for descent, and some snacks are advisable because facilities on the summit are limited.

Is this tour private or group based?

Meals are usually not included in the base tour price unless specified; you’ll have breaks where you can buy food locally.

Are entrance fees included?

Yes, standard entrance fees for Mt Nemrut and associated monuments such as Karakus Tumulus are included. Any extra costs for optional services (e.g. snacks, tips) are separate.

Where does the tour end?

After sunset atop Nemrut’s summit, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or airport in Adıyaman or Kahta, as per arrangement; finish time depends on sunset and travel back.
